Ways you can identify what is causing your high blood pressure

By Athena Hunter

The causes of high blood pressure are not always easy to identify since there are many different elements that contribute to it and it's not always possible to distinguish the cause. You'll want to get diagnosed early to avoid other complications. You are more likely to avoid the causes if you know what they are.

Being overweight or obese is one of the leading causes of high blood pressure, especially in modern times. Obesity is the leading cause of high blood pressure in developed countries which have seen a sharp rise in cases. High blood pressure for an overweight person can be a warning sign to other health problems too. You can often lower your blood pressure simply by changing your lifestyle, diet and exercise.

High blood pressure can be caused or worsened by drinking too much alcohol. Recent evidence suggests that wine and other alcoholic beverages may actually be healthy in small quantities, and be good for your blood pressure. However, it's also true that people who consume more than two alcoholic beverages per day have a higher risk of health problems such as high blood pressure. For people who have trouble controlling their alcohol consumption, it's preferable for them to stay away from it than to overindulge. To control your blood pressure, then, the ideal is to consume small amounts of alcohol, but it's better not to drink at all than to drink too much.

There are also a variety of medications and drugs that can cause hypertension. People addicted to street drugs, especially "uppers" or cocaine, are prone to high blood pressure. High blood pressure can also be caused by taking prescription drugs, including many antidepressants and birth control pills. Even over the counter medications such as nasal decongestants and appetite suppressants can sometimes have this effect. If you are prone to high blood pressure, then, research any medication you take and always read the labels. Always ask your doctor if any medication he or she has prescribed may cause high blood pressure.

When it comes to identifying the causes of high blood pressure, you have to consider your family and medical history, diet and lifestyle. If you have high blood pressure, your doctor can help you identify any risk factors so you can make the necessary changes. As we've seen, there are many possible causes of high blood pressure, which is why it's recommended that you get your checked consistently. Reducing your blood pressure is something everyone can do once you know it's something you have to focus on.
