Ways you can identify what is causing your high blood pressure

By Athena Hunter

Having your blood pressure checked regularly is the only way to know if you have high blood pressure which has many causes. One single cause has not be identified for high blood pressure but there are a variety of factors that make it more likely. Let's take a look at some conditions that can cause high blood pressure.

Smoking is one activity that can cause high blood pressure. Along with all of the other health problems smoking can cause, it can also increase your blood pressure. The reasons that smokers often have high blood pressure and heart problems is that smoking blocks the arteries. The more you smoke, the more of a risk it is, both for high blood pressure and many other illnesses. But people who smoke in moderation, or who are frequently around others who smoke, are endangering their health. While it's not always easy to quit smoking, it's worth the effort, as this is a simple way to lower your blood pressure.

Yet both men and women can have high blood pressure at any age, and this condition is actually becoming more common in young people, especially those who are overweight. It's recommended to have your blood pressure checked regularly, especially if you're over forty, as this is when it becomes more likely that you'll develop this problem. Your age, of course, is only one risk factor for high blood pressure, and you have to consider your everyday habits as well.

Still, even if an exact cause isn't found, it is known that many things, such as smoking, your diet and how old you are can put you at risk for hypertension. Since the causes are hard to pinpoint, you have to have your blood pressure checked to know if it's high. There are many changes you can make to lower your risk, and ways to treat it when it's been diagnosed, but doctors are still doing research on the exact cause of high blood pressure.

You will find that some foods also contribute to this condition. It's well known that eating too much salt can be a factor, and if you've been diagnosed with hypertension it's recommended that you eat a low sodium diet. Hypertension can be caused by other foods too such as sugar and high fat foods. Most high blood pressure can be controlled with the right diet including vegetables and fruits. While diet is only one contributing factor it's an important one.

No matter what is causing hypertension, you should not underestimate how dangerous it can be. The main reason people's blood pressure gets out of control is because they don't monitor it, or don't listen to their doctors. High blood pressure can have a variety of causes, some known and some unknown, and we've explored some of the possibilities in this article. Fortunately, once this problem has been diagnosed, there are quite a few ways to manage it and reduce your blood pressure.
