3 Possible Causes of High Blood Pressure

By Athena Hunter

While a variety of factors can cause high blood pressure, the important thing is to identify it as soon as possible, as it can lead to serious diseases if left untreated. It's easy to get your blood pressure checked, and you can even buy kits to check it yourself at home (though the cheaper units are not considered very accurate). Common causes of high blood pressure will be discussed here in this article although they are not the only ones.

One risk factor for high blood pressure is simply aging. Statistically, high blood pressure is more common in men after forty-five, and a little later for women.

Heavy drinkers of alcohol are putting themselves at risk for hypertension. Alcohol consumption is tricky when it comes to your health, because many experts now believe that light to moderate drinking may be good for your heart. However, it's also true that people who consume more than two alcoholic beverages per day have a higher risk of health problems such as high blood pressure. For people who have trouble controlling their alcohol consumption, it's preferable for them to stay away from it than to overindulge. Alcohol, then, may be beneficial in small doses, but heavy drinking raises your blood pressure, as well as the other risks it poses to your health.

The beneficial kind of cholesterol is HDL, and this does the opposite of LDL, and can help lower your blood pressure. You can increase the levels of good cholesterol in your body by getting more exercise and eating a healthy diet. Avoiding unhealthy foods, such as hydrogenated oils, processed foods and most fast foods can help you to reduce the bad cholesterol in your diet. Your cholesterol levels and your blood pressure are often related, and controlling both of these are essential.

If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you should work with your doctor to find out which of the many causes may have lead to you developing this condition. The main advantage to identifying the cause of high blood pressure is that it can help you to make changes that can reverse it. Even if some of the causes of high blood pressure mentioned above apply to you, you still need to consider your lifestyle and medical history as there are many other causes as well.
